According to Austrian law medical practice in the health sector is allowed only to specialist with medical education. That’s why all old methods, and non-traditional medicine, including traditional healers and physics are prohibited. This ensures clarity in the monitoring of treatment of patients. So, Austrian are don’t about situations where patients after treatment with a traditional healers gets in hospital in a serious condition.

In 2004 in Austria 38 422 doctors were working : 11 716 – therapeutics, 16 426 - narrow specialists, 4 106 - dentists, 6 174 held an internship. Austrian health system development focuses on the specialization of each area of medicine, so the number of doctors narrow profile increased thrice. According to the national Statistical Service, the number of health care professionals in Austria is 2.9 per thousand population , which is higher than in Britain.

The minimum duration of study6 years, and the average duration – 7,5 – 8 years. Then begins the second part of the educational process, which involves in acquisition of practical skills. Internship in the industry common practice takes 3 years, and to obtain a certificate of a narrow specialist – 6 years.

The part of the therapeutic course is to work in primary health care facilities during one semester. After the internship, the future doctors expect a comprehensive exam, which allows the delivery of work in medical facilities or open a private practice. Graduates of foreign medical schools also are allowed to undergo internship in hospitals of Austria, but this process usually takes a long time, and a final positive response can be expected over a year because of the huge number of applicants.
