Velingrad is  one of the most popular Bulgarian balneological resorts. It lies at the western end of Chepino Valley, part of the Rhodope Mountains in Southern Bulgaria. The unique combination of climate, mineral waters and wonderful nature makes the town a preferable tourist destination for recreation, treatment and rest.

The fur-tree forest, the strong sunshine and the clear mountain air create conditions which have a positive influence on the organism of humans. The greatest wealth of Velingrad and the region are its water resources. Together with the numerous mineral waters, Velingrad boasts another natural phenomenon as well — the Kleptuza, the biggest Karst spring in Bulgaria, with an average discharge of 1200 litres of ice-cold water per second.

There are 70 sources of mineral water with curative and preventive properties in and around the town. The mineral waters (from springs and wells) vary considerably in temperature, mineralization, radon, silicic acid and fluorine content, and are suitable for treatment of a wide range of diseases. They are hypothermal with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 88°C. 9000 litres of water per minute spring from the five thermal and mineral deposits in Ladzhene, Kamenitsa, Chepino, Rakitovo and Kostandovo.

In the resort pulmonary cases are successfully treated:

  • pulmonary emphysema
  • chronic bronchitis
  • post bronchial pneumonia, etc.

The treatment of non-specific diseases of the respiratory tract is particularly successful. Considerable experience has been accumulated in the efficient treatment of diseases of:

  • locomotive system
  • nervous diseases
  • gynecological disorders
