Coronary heart disease (CHD)

Coronary heart disease (CHD)
refers to the failure of coronary circulation to supply adequate circulation to cardiac muscle and surrounding tissue. It is the single most common cause of death in Europe, the Baltic states, Russia, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand, responsible for nearly two million deaths a year.

If your coronary arteries become partially blocked, it can cause chest pain (angina). If they become completely blocked, it can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction).

Risk of developing coronary heart disease is significantly increased if you:

  • smoke
  • have high blood pressure
  • have a high blood cholesterol level
  • do not take regular exercise
  • have a thrombosis
  • have diabetes
  • being obese or overweight
  • having a family history of heart attack or angina

A number of different tests are used to diagnose heart-related problems including:

  • coronary angiogram
  • electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • radionuclide tests
  • electrophysiological testing

Treatment of coronary disease is highly individual, and must be based on a patient's symptoms and diagnostic test results. For some people, careful lifestyle changes and medications can control the disease. In more serious cases, surgery may be required. In any case, the disease requires lifelong management.
