Primary infertility describe a couple that has never been able to conceive a pregnancy, after at least 1 year of unprotected intercourse. Secondary infertility describes couples who have previously been pregnant at least once, but have not been able to achieve another pregnancy.
Approximately 15% of couples trying to get pregnant have difficulty conceiving. One-third of infertility cases are caused by a problem on the woman’s side, one-third are from the man’s side, and the remaining third involve problems on both sides, or unexplained causes. Many times (65%) these infertility factors can be overcome and pregnancy can be achieved.
With the infertility diagnosis a series of tests conducted in both the man (low sperm production, sperm malformations) and woman (ovulatory disorders, anatomical disorders). The tests are done to check if the woman is ovulating and to look for any abnormalities in her uterus or fallopian tubes. In men, the infertility workup involves performing a semen analysis to evaluate the quality and quantity of the man's sperm.
The diagnostic process can take months because of the sequencing of tests.
