Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer that forms in tissues of the cervix . It is usually a slow-growing cancer that may not have symptoms but can be found with regular Pap tests (a procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix and looked at under a microscope). Cervical cancer is almost always caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

Women help reduce their risk of cervical cancer by having regular Pap tests (cervical smear). Pap tests can find cervical cancer or abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer, can help find cancer early, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

Other tests to make a diagnosis: colposcopy,biopsy, punch biopsy, LEEP, endocervical curettage, conization.

Possible risk factors include the following:

  • Giving birth to many children.
  • Having many sexual partners.
  • Having first sexual intercourse at a young age.
  • Smoking cigarettes.
  • Oral contraceptive use ("the Pill").
  • Weakened immune system.

There are many treatment options of cervical cancer. The options are:

  • surgery (for women with Stage I or II cervical cancer),
  • radiotherapy (for women with Stage I or II cervical cancer),
  • chemotherapy (usually combined with radiation therapy. For cancer that has spread to distant organs, chemotherapy alone may be used),
  • or a combination of methods.

The treatment depends on the size of the tumor and whether the cancer has spread, and also if woman would like to become pregnant someday.
